You ARE A Writer
There seems to be a question that plagues all of us at one point or another in our writing journey. Whether you’re a weathered writer or just starting out, we always ask this same question. Yet in the hours upon hours I’ve spent watching vlogs and reading blogs, this question always seems to get skimmed over.
What is that question? “How do I know if I’m a writer?”
Well I want to tackle this question head on. So, here’s how to know if you’re a writer.
Defining a writer
Let’s start by defining what a writer is. According to dictionary.com a writer is a person who commits his or her ideas to writing. Also, a person who engages in writing, whether it be articles, books, stories, etc.
So let’s think about that. Do you commit your ideas to writing? Do you engage in writing articles, books, stories, or other things? In other words, do you write?
If the answer is yes, then you’re probably a writer.
It’s something personal
But that’s really only half the answer. Everyone writes something in their lives. Does that mean that the billions of people on Earth are writers because they finished their college application letters, passed notes in class, or whatever else? Probably not. Actually there are plenty of people who dislike the very idea of writing, let alone the idea of calling themselves writers.
What really makes a writer a writer is the passion for the craft. Do you love to do it?
Personally, there’s something magical and unspoken about writing. It makes my heart race. It gives me a tingly feeling inside and a sense of nostalgia. I can’t stop thinking about it. I can’t stop coming up with ideas.
For myself, there’s just no way around it. I’m a writer. Even when I’m not writing because of self doubt, a busy schedule, or writer’s block, I can’t escape it. It’s just who I am. It always has been.
I believe that many writers are like this. They have some sort of strong bond that ties them to the title; they have an emotional and mental bond.
Answer it for yourself!
It’s not a question that you can really ask someone else. It’s something that you have to realize on your own. It’s something that you just feel.
Sure, many of us writers have a lot of similarities, but you don’t necessarily need those to be able to say, “Hello, world! I’m a writer!”
Think about it. Are you a writer? Well, let’s go through a checklist:
- Do you write? √
- Do you have a passion for writing? √
- Can you escape it? ⊗
- Did you come across this post while looking up anything writing related? √ (How did this one NOT give you the answer you were looking for?)
If your checklist looks like mine, then congratulations, you’re a writer. It’s that simple.
